Not all "clean beauty" is created equal. We recognize products across three evidence-based tiers, with primary focus on Tier 2: Advanced Clean—products that balance botanical wisdom with beneficial modern ingredients.
Entry Clean
Not featured at Sankofa. These products may pass mainstream "clean beauty" standards, but don't meet our requirements for melanated people.
Advanced Clean
Thoughtfully formulated products that combine botanical ingredients with well-studied, safe synthetic actives and preservatives.
Ultra Clean
Exclusively botanical and organic formulations with natural preservatives only. Perfect for those seeking maximum ingredient simplicity.

How We Evaluate Products
- Include beneficial lab-created ingredients (like niacinamide for hyperpigmentation)
- Use effective, well-researched preservatives (ensuring product safety and stability)
- Still exclude ALL harmful ingredients (sulfates, parabens, phthalates, formaldehyde-releasing preservatives)
- May contain phthalate-free synthetic fragrance with full disclosure
- Prioritize efficacy without compromising safety

We evaluate every brand against our ingredient requirements, regardless of popularity or market presence. Not every Black-owned beauty brand qualifies for Sankofa—our standards ensure that every product we feature genuinely serves melanated people.

We verify all claims, reject greenwashing, and ensure ingredient lists match marketing promises. Complete formulation transparency is non-negotiable.
