Sankofa Collective™ began with a question I couldn't stop asking: why are the people who so often set the standard for beauty the last ones truly served by it?
Sankofa is a word I carried before I fully understood why. It means to move forward while reaching back for what matters — to reclaim what was never meant to be left behind. I named the company after the idea before I could name the paradox at its center.
Beauty is one of the most lucrative industries in the world, and so much of what fuels it — the culture, the trends, the standard — flows from a community that rarely sees the value return. Sankofa is built to reverse that current: to curate Black-owned, advanced clean brands, vet them with a clinician's rigor, and redirect value back to the people who created the demand in the first place.

Dr. A. Elizabeth Ferguson brings a rare lens to clean beauty — one shaped by decades at the intersection of science, service, and strategy. A Doctor of Pharmacy and retired U.S. Air Force Major, she spent her career as a federal pharmacist with the Defense Health Agency, ensuring that what people put in and on their bodies was safe, effective, and accessible. As a Health Policy Advisor to the U.S. Senate — drafting legislation for both the Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) and the Committee on Finance — she helped shape the policies behind how Americans experience healthcare, wellness, and consumer safety.
Her through-line began earlier, at Howard University, where she came to understand that representation isn't a nice-to-have — it's the foundation on which trust, innovation, and community are built. That conviction is the credential behind every product on our platform.
